The p670 will run AIX 5.1 or 5.2. The main difference between them is dynamic logical partitions (DLPAR).
AIX 5.1 will do logical partitions (LPAR) but they are static and to change them they have to be shutdown.

If your system can handle all the drives, then install the
new one. Add it to the vg of the failing drive. extendvg - then use migratepv to move all the data from one disk to the other.

Try this
Follow these steps:
Boot the system from an AIX CD, an AIX product tape or the mksysb tape.
From the Installation and Maintenance menu, select option 3.
From the Maintenance menu, select option 4.
Choose the tape drive that contains the mksysb tape image.

1. Remove all copies from disk:
# rmlvcopy lv_xx 1 hdiskX
2. Remove disk from volume group
# reducevg vg_name hdiskX
3. Remove disk from ODM:
# rmdev -l hdiskX -d
4. Connect new disk to system:
# smit, smitty wsm or cfgmgr
5. Add new disk to volume group:
# extendvg vg_name...
