I have a system running XP Home and it has started to run the text from left to right ??? (like this "xof nworb kciuq eht" If anyone can shed any light on how to get back to normal text direction it would be very helpful as I can only think of formatting and reinstalling everything again.

It sounds like you have set a password in the bios for user and supervisor. You can go back into setup and make both the passwords the same or set it so that it does not ask for a password at all.
The only way that you can protect your PC from unauthorised access is to setup a password at startup from within the bios. Win9x passwords are only intended for setting up user profiles and not real security, for this you will need NTFS or similar
