Does the BIOS recognise the drive correctly (for its size etc)? Does the Win XP install disk recognise the drive correctly during set-up? You can check this by using the install disk to format and partition the Hard Drive as NTFS. You should see the correct size of the HD (or near enough)...

Have you scanned the disk for boot record/file corruption or surface errors? If the HD will respond to that then at least you are part way there as if it can spin and read etc then its not totally trashed.
