Thanks for the advice Bob.
One more piece of guidance if I may.. It's clear from the NetBackup manuals that performing a catalog backup whilst other backups/restores is frowned upon, but what is the real impact?
My limited knowledge of oracle hot/cold backups would lead me to believe that it...
Hi All,
We are running NB4.5-FP6. Our catalog size is approaching 25Gb (and growing organically). We've made some gains in reducing the catalog size by reviewing our policy setups and retention periods but the size is making the creation of the catalog tapes a little painful.
At this time I...
Hi,
I have a policy which runs a Full schedule with say 10 streams and 5 of these complete successfully and the other 5 fail.
Does NetBackup consider the files in the successfull streams to be properly backed up? In other words will the incremental the next night effectively perform a full on...
So, lets simplify the example, caus it sounds like I'm missing something obvious:
I have one filesystem (/home) on an emc rig which I want to backup to 4 drives. Can I configure NB for multiple concurrent streams without using file list directives?
(Working late tonight aren't we!)
Agreed - each filesystem will use a drive, but if I'm only backing up one filesystem (/home in the example) that doesn't help me.
Ofcourse I could set about splitting the lvol into pieces and re-designing the LUN layout on the rig, but this is a huge parcel of...
So no way of putting a single filesystem to multiple drives without breaking it down into streams?
I can see why NB works like it does, its kind of to protect users against hammering a disk jumping from platter to platter, but the problem really isn't there when you are talking about SAN...
The opposite of multistreaming I guess is what I'm after. Not multiple policies going to a single drive, but a single policy going to multiple drives.
I can't easily split the file-list across more than one policy, because I'm using pre and post script (I'd have to write a clever bit of...
Cheers Guys!
Am I missing something very obvious here? Is there a way of spanning a single filesystem backup across more than one drive without breaking it down into streams. Auto-streaming won't do this will it?
comtec17 - what do you mean by seperate class? do you mean a seperate policy...
Hi Folks,
I'm coming up against a challenge with the definition of streams in a policy. A trivial example of the situation I have is as follows:
Say I want to backup the contents of /home on a unix server (NB4.5MP3) HPUX. I've got 5 drives which I want to use and 4 of my users have large...
HaHa!
I stand corrected. My full test of downing all drives but one confirmed that Netbackup does indeed reserve a drive and piece of media before it starts the backup_notify script. It will never tell you this in device manager, but its true.
Cheers,
Tommojunior
Yeah, that's the impression I got too. However, its not true. In my dummy "sleep 10000" job, the job quite happily starts and sits running the bpstart_notify. While its running, the device manager shows no evidence of the media server having reserved a drive, this seems to (thankfully)...
Hi,
Don't forget that you can make use of the "scratch pool". This is a pool of tapes, which are held in reserve (so to speak) for when any other "real" pool runs out of tapes.
Any new tapes you get in get added to the scratch pool. There may be some basic maths to do...
Hi,
I'm running 4.5MP3 on hpux. We are looking to use the bpstart_notify and bpend_notify scripts to perform our own scripted and sql backups of some large oracle backups.
Some of these "hot" or "cold" pre script can last upto five hours, so I've set BPSTART_NOTIFY to 32767...
Nice to have an expert on the case...Thanks...
At present, just a single media server (likely to be broken down in the future). single SAN connected Scalar 10k with 20 LTO drives. 10 or so of the servers (HP) backing up across the SAN, others 100 or gigabit LAN connected.
Using version 4.5GA...
Hi,
I'm trying to set up an audit trail for tracking the policy definitions in our environment. Is it possible to view the defined client include/exclude lists (exclude_list.policy_name) from the masterGUI?
Failing that, is it possible to run a command on the master to return the lists from...
I'm lucky enough to be the guy who is to configure netbackup in an environment of over 150 servers of various flavours from unix to win2000.
So far, so good. Netbackup is behaving and feeding the Scalar ADIC well.
My question is on best practice for organising schedules for the various...
Good Question - I'm about to embark on attending as many veritas courses as possible before my v-pass runs out...
What does "Veritas Certification" mean anyway, do you become certified in a particular topic (i.e. netbackup) or everything that Veritas has to offer?
My only thought is to use the "gui include" to specify everything, have the client exclude list set to everything also and then explicitly define what you actually want in the client include list.
You can't add something with the include list that wasn't initially added via the master...
