I don't know where you from but I would consider a training.
Here in the Netherlands you can go to http://www.ddls.didata.nl and look for the Passport, currently know as Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 course
I've experience with both Cisco and Nortel,
I would advise you to use the Nortel solution simply because the excellent redundant SMLT solution.
Beside that, the Nortel hardware is much cheaper.
Boot with the old (working) config.
then enter "source /flash/<newconfigfile> syntax"
This command will load the new config without using the config, it will only check on errors.
