I just went through one of those weekends that every systems administrator dreads -- a server disaster that has no explanation.
We are a small domain -- eight subnets, three controllers, about 100 clients. We're W2K all around on our servers and our primary master also functions as our exchange...
Does anyone know of a way to organize the stuff in the users folder of AD? I've got all these users, preconfigured security groups, created security groups, distribution groups, etc. in there and it's a mess trying to scroll down this huge list to find anything. However, there doesn't seem to be...
Got a problem that's driving me bonkers. Got a file server that's sitting on a different subnet that my main DC and firewall. I'd like to turn this file server into a DC to help with login traffic. However, when I run DCPROMO I'm running into a problem. I get all the way through, to the point to...
That's not really an option. Out firewall is set up to disallow traffic on any TCP port except the ones we specify. If I disable the SMTP filter, then we won't be able to receive traffic on that port and no one will get outside e-mail.
I probably wasn't specific enough above. I saw the article...
Not sure if this should be on the Windows 2000 board or here. We're getting the following error message a lot in the application log of our firewall server that's running W2K and ISA:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: SmtpEvt
Event Category: None
Event ID: 17220
Date: 6/20/2002
Time: 12:42:31 PM...
I'm going to defer to other folks on that question. I've never attempted to make that kind of a change, and don't have a clue as to the ramifications it would have. I will say this, though -- About six months ago, we had another issue with our network that we had to consult with Microsoft on...
chawaje:
Let me preface this by saying we don't have a www record in our DNS, and this is because we have an external provider for our website. Therefore we don't need one.
However, to set up a www record for your DNS, you would need to go to the forward lookup zone, then your domain within...
Do you have a www record in your local DNS pointing to the right place? Unless I'm way off base, that will probably help your internal problems accessing www.company.com.
As for the OWA, ours operates under a different address. Ours is http://mail.company.com/exchange and it works both...
I'm going to agree with NYR. I had something similar happen a while back. We have TS with only one license per server. In other words only one TS session at a time is allowed. I logged into a server and forgot to log off; I just hit the X at the top of the window to close it, then basically...
The firewall server is W2K with ISA. And recursion is not disabled at all.
DNS is working at some level, because my client machine's DNS cache contains entries for local A records from the local DNS server. Me: We need a better backup system.
My boss's boss: Backup? We don't need no stinkin'...
Yep, I get the website's IP address when I ping www.company.com, not our interntal IP address.
And here's something else interesting. If I do a tracert from a command prompt to www.company.com, the FIRST hop is not to the local DNS server, it's to the firewall server, which then forwards it on...
Duh, sorry, bronto, I'm brain dead this morning. Didn't understand your question about the caching, but I do now.
As to your other question, yes, our DNS server points only to itself for name resolution. The internal NIC of our firewall server points to the DNS server, and the external NIC...
Yes, the clients only point to our internal DNS server for name resolution. Before we switched to Windows 2000, we sent them to our ISP's DNS servers, but changed that when we migrated from NT4.
Our firewall server is multihoned (internal and external interface), but our DC-DNS server is on...
I've been reading several threads in this forum about people having problems with DNS when they have an internal company domain (company.com) that matches their external web domain hosted by an outside provider (www.company.com). Most of the time, the suggestion is made to add a www record in...
Don't have an answer to the first question, but I do have an answer to the first one. It's my experience that you don't need the www dns record at all. It just gets in the way, for the very reason you're talking about. We don't have a www record in our DNS, which means that our DNS server treats...
I've got two Dell Servers, one a desktop, one a rack server, both running W2K Server. With a few days of each other, each got the following popup message:
The controller battery needs reconditioning.
The following message was in the system event log:
Event Type: Information
Event Source...
Running a Windows 2K network over a frame relay with nine subnets. Have a server on a seperate subnet from the main DC that I want to promote to a DC to handle logins for that subnet. However, I get as far in DCPROMO as the screen where you specify what domain you want the DC to be a part of. It...
Tried that and it didn't work. The trace revelealed that the packets are getting as far as the router at the main office and dying there. The router at the main office is not sending them on to the correct subnet. Maybe this will help -- the main office subnet is 10.0.2.0. The satellite subnets...
Got a problem with my routers that I don't know if I'll get answered because my manufacturer (NX Networks) went belly up and sold out. This looked like as good as any place to put it. Forgive me, but I'm a bit desperate. Here's my scenario: We have an internal network with nine Open Route...
