Hello,
We have a forest with an empty root domain, and a populated child domain. The child domain has abotu 35 DCs. One DC in each domain is 2012 R2, the rest are 2008 R2. We'd like to migrate all DCs to 2012 R2.
First off - any reason not to do this?
Second - would you guys recommend...
I am trying to edit my local hosts file - it seems that IE9 ignores the file, while firefox (and ping) does not.
For example, my hosts file has the following:
1.2.3.4 www.aol.com
1.2.3.4 aol.com
When I ping aol.com, it reads the hosts file:
C:\>ping aol.com
Pinging aol.com [1.2.3.4] with 32...
I always pronounced that wood "sah-pay-lay". I'm a woodworker, but i could definitely be mistaken.
Irregardless (yes, on purpose) of it's pronunciation, it is a beautiful wood!
Thanks,
Andrew

We have an account in our domain called "help". This account is solely used for resetting forgotten passwords, and is VERY restricted with GPO.
Is there any way to have this account not ever be locked out? We are on a 2008 R2 domain. Thanks.
Thanks,
Andrew

We have a 2008 R2 domain in a 2003 functional level forest. We will be removing the one 2003 domain left and then promoting the forest to 2008 R2 native mode.
We need to have one of our 2008 domains replicate over a firewall. After researching, there seem to be 3 ways to do it:
1. Open...
Is there any way to make RDP use a standart port (3389), but have the drive mapping and clipboard mapping functions use it's own separate port?
I am trying to limit access from home users through VPN - so they cannot map drive & clipboard, but still allow these features if connecting inside the...

You need to DENY the "Apply Group Policy" to machines that you DON'T want to have the GPO applied.

Hello - I have a 2003 AD with a couple of 2008 R2 DCs. We have 11 sites, a DC at each site.
We have Not sure how or when this happened, but it appears some of the site info in DNS is missing on some domain controllers. There are replication issues, (RPC server not available) when trying to...
I already have a script written that has a hash object in it to do the lookups. it reads their current IP, does the lookup, and adds the second as a secondary IP. I could easily change this script to replace the IP with the new one, not add. I may try to write the script that, each time they run...
So is there any way to give a PC two IP addresses, and have the user get a connection on either one?
My original thought was that if at least one of the IPs in the list was valid, the user would connect. I guess I was wrong....is there any way to do it that way, or have it "fail over" to a...
I had a feeling this would spark a debate on DHCP. I work for a small section of my company, and our move will not prompt and enterprise-wide change to DHCP, no matter how much it makes sense.
Thanks,
Andrew

Well users will be moving on various days.....otherwise a scheduled task could work.
Our users are admins on their PCs, so we wouldn't need the secondary admin account. Maybe just putting the icon on the desktop is the best way. Hate to not have it fully automated...but what can you do...
Let me amend my post:
I KNOW dhcp makes this easier, but there is NO way it's going to happen. :)
Thanks,
Andrew

My company does not use DHCP - all IPs are hardcoded (a problem i have no authority to solve). We have 300 users moving from one location to another, and their IP addresses will need to be changed to one in a different subnet.
I will have a one-to-one mapping of IP addresses (old-->new).
My...
This resolved itself somehow after like 3 days of not working.....now all is fine.

Andrew

Our 2003 domain (with a few 2008 R2 DCs) is currently set up as follows:
Main Site - 2 DCs
11 Branch sites - 1 DC each
Every branch site has a site link set up between it and the main site.
Our main site will be going away, one of the branches will become the new main site. I am trying to...
I have a windows 2003 domain. I have added a new domain 2008 R2 controller in a new site. I do already have one fully-functional 2008 R2 DC in one of our other sites.
When I try to force a manual replication in Sites & Services, I get this generic error:
The following error occured during the...
