When preflighting, I've always thought it would be SUPER handy to have an action (or similar) that simply runs through your document, changing all RGB images to CMYK, resolution to 300dpi if needed, and resaved as a copy in TIF format, then relinked to the new 300dpi CMYK TIF file.

Sure, I agree with you wholeheartedly - but if I had a dime for everytime I've had to design something (usually annual reports) while the content is still being written...
(Or for everytime I was still waiting for content 1 week AFTER the supposed print deadline!)

...but on the sound of it, it looks lie it is simply the way our crappy laser printer is interpreting the dots.

Like I said, the issue is most visible in the printing, moreso than the screen....and if it is visible on screen, it is only so when zoomed out siginificantly.
When zoomed in, the dots are evenly spaced....hence...I'm baffled!
Argh....this is baffling me!
For my table styles I have used the Japanese Dots stroke option. When I zoom in on the dotted strokes, it appears to have even spacing between all dots....
