I've done that already, and it does default to Applications, but it is not saved. Once that windown is closed, I can reopen it immediately and exe does not exist. I've tried this a number of times, and the result is always the same. Based on one of the first replies to this thread...

I seem to have fixed the problem with finding autocheck. Windows 2000 now starts normally. This required a registry change, and I can go through it if someone asks. I don't have the notes in front of me.
