and I forgot to mention, the problem with office occured even if an administrtor logged into the machine.
Also, the problem became really bad after SP1 of office and Vista.
So the only conclusion that I can come to is that SP1 has somehow stuffed up the permissions.
BTW. I am running Vista 64

Thanks for the tip. I had a similar problem to ray1injt in that I could not delette .pip entry.
I then granted myself full control to the .pip subkey. This allowed me to delete the key. However, the problem did not go away.
