perluser.........thanks for all the cool links, but I read all of that about a year ago when I began to use linux. My question now is how do take from my posts that I know nothing about Linux?
Maybe if just once you forum idiots would just stop an actually read the posts that you are responding...
For example......the apache docs state that when you run www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/test.pl it looks for /usr/local/cgi-bin/test.pl.......
but I have nothing related to apache anywhere in those files because those are in my root partition and the apache server is installed on my home partition.......
ok...heres the deal...
Im running a vector distro that uses three seperate partitions, a 230 mb swap partition, a 3000mb root partition, and the rest of the disk space for a home partition. So the home partition is set apart from the root partition, for security I guess more than anything else...
Hmmm.....maybe I should reinstall the server into the root directory instead of the home directory. They are seperate in my distro.
I can actually get into the http server from a webbrowser and serv-up all the web pages I want, but things like cgi dont work and Im thinking its because its not...
Where do you experts suggest installing the apache server in Linux? I've installed it in my home directory and I can't get anything to work!
Should I have installed it in /usr/local......? Thats what Im thinking
got it.......im behind a router, so i had to forward traffic to my ip. Iv'e also discovered that I need to register a domain name and have them route the requests to my ip address.........is that right?

Im not sure what you mean about DNS? I understand the concept of Domain Name Resolution but what do I need to do to apply that to this?
I changed to port 90 because every post I've read concludes that isp's block port 80 for apache!
Ok......ive set up apache on my linux system and I can log into it and view my html pages from my system by typing in the name of my computer (ritch.linux.vnet) or http://localhost. But I cant go to another computer and do the same!
