The *_i*, clients, vol and ss files are all created for faster indexing
It sometimes happens that the indexes get corrupted giving some
pretty weird behaviour. You can force a media database 'scavenge' by shutting down Networker, removing
*_i*
ss...
Going off on a bit of a tangent - but how are you 'clearing' the tape ?
nsrstage does all this for you - I use it regularly to clear down mostly expired media
