I had a similar problem when using rdist. I just had to change the default value so that it did not time out. Your problem may be the same. Have you thought about using rdist?
I use the idleout command. Type idleout 3:0 as root and this will logout ALL users that have not been active for the past 3 hours. Quite effective. It does tie up a terminal though.
