FYI I found the answer just after posting. Here it is
in /etc/httpd/conf.d a file had been created (I guess by some mrtg install today) called images.conf that contained the following (below)
The /images alias was overriding my images directory in my virtual server....ARGH!!!!!!!

Stumped on a problem. Just had to rebuild a linux server (Fedora 4 running Apache 2.0.54) after a disk failure and have 4 virtual webservers set up.
On each website my images are not getting displayed. When checking the logs I see entries such as:
[Thu Mar 01 00:31:09 2007] [error]...
