I have a similar situation. You need to make sure the MX records in DNS for the domain point to the server running exchange- this will enable remote mail systems to contact the right computer.

Thanks! Turns out I have exchange 2000 with active directory, so your suggestion pointed me in the right direction. Instead of a custom recipient, one now creates a contact. Otherwise the procedure is the same.
I need to forward mail inbound to one of my Exchange users to his internet mail account (joe@anywhere.com). I can see how to set up forwarding to another of my exchange uses, but not to an arbitrary internet address.
