UDMA 4 limited to 2 by WinXP - Slow programing launcing etc

Thanks very much to you both - I have downloaded the files and will try the drivers. However, I have removed some of the laptop covering to inspect the hard drive and its very short cable connection. I notice it only has 40 wires, will this therefore limit me to UDMA2. Also will the upgrades...

UDMA 4 limited to 2 by WinXP - Slow programing launcing etc

I upgraded my notebook from WinMe to XPPRo. Now the hard drive seems to be much slower - awfully slow - than before. The SIS 630 IDE driver for Win XP, says UDMA4 is possible but that it is only running at UDMA 2. There is no option to up it. As it is mobile the HD seems to plug into the...

Win 98 SE, system black screen, long delay tol oad

John Many thanks for your continued help. I do not have a scanner termination block but I could ask around the local hardware stores tomorrow to see if I can get one. Are you reasonably sure this could be the culprit? Regards Phil

Win 98 SE, system black screen, long delay tol oad

Thanks john No the delay is still the same, about 30/35 seconds even though normal start up has been resumed. There are no config, sys or autoexec.bat messages when Escape is pressed. On the msconfig box there are no entries under either tab. Regards Phil

Win 98 SE, system black screen, long delay tol oad

Thanks John Yes thats where i inserted the IP address, i did not enter the subnet mask but when I checked now it is there automatically. The delay is certainly less but not cured. Thanks Phil

Win 98 SE, system black screen, long delay tol oad

Apologies - I still had diagnostic start up on. When normal chosen in msconfig, the system boots through. Although the delay is still there it has been cut at the same point from 1.5 minutes to 30 seconds. It still seems strange that after the Windows 98 screen it reverts to a black 'loading OS...

Win 98 SE, system black screen, long delay tol oad

Thanks jrbarnett I took it that you meant assign an IP address to the TCP/IP protocol, if you meant on the card itself I could not see where. It did help speed it up but after the bios boot it now insists on offering the options of 1.Normal, 2.Bootlog.txt safe mode etc... If you have enabled me...

    data security

If I transfer some files to a hard drive from an Iomega zip disk would the files now on the hard drive contain any remnants of information that the files originally wrote over the top of that may have been on the Zip drive. My concern is that you hear recovery is possible of data deleted...
