Trouble gleaning distincts, all fields same except one

I am getting technically distinct records since one of the fields is different, but I don't want all of them, just the one with the largest number in it. Here is an example of what my current sql statement is returning: field1, field2, field3 apple, fruit, 50 apple, fruit, 43 apple, fruit, 32...

Restarting SQL Agent automatically (not working)

Thanks, I'll check out whether it is set to manual or not, I can't believe I was so stupid to expect it would be auto on boot. SQLDenis, I have bookmarked your site as well as this one.

Restarting SQL Agent automatically (not working)

very funny. We have UPCs for all the servers. The problem is when the power outage is too long for the UPCs to handle (small company, no budget). So is the real answer that SQL Server Agent will not restart even though it is set to start on boot and restart of stopped? Doesn't this setting...

Restarting SQL Agent automatically (not working)

I have set SQL Server Agent to restart automatically if it stops unexpectedly. Unfortunately we have brief power outages, sometimes quite frequently. I take a look at the server after it is restarted and SQL Server Agent is stopped. I have some fairly critical jobs that need to run on a...

Moving Sharepoint from a Test Server to the Real Server???

Sorry, this is if you are using Sharepoint Portal Server and SQL Server as the database. Make sure both machines are the same versions and patched to the same level on both machines. Make the database backup on one. Move the backup file to the new machine. Then on the new machine use Sharepoint...

Moving Sharepoint from a Test Server to the Real Server???

Thanks, called Microsoft. Just install Sharepoint Portal Server on the new machine, do a SQL database backup on the old machine, then do a SQL database restore from that backup onto the new machine. BAM! Everything is on the new machine.

Deleting/updating thousands of records at once

Thank you very much for the replies. That particular table has 40 fields, two primary keys and one index (I think). 7500 updates took over an hour to complete (just finished now). Anyway to see at a glance how many indexes in the database?

Deleting/updating thousands of records at once

I keep running into the problem of my sql server database not being able to delete large numbers of records. It just sits and spins so to speak, and I have to eventually just stop it. It is pretty good hardware, dual xeon, 2 gigs ram, etc. How can I do large deletes and updates in SQL Server...

Getting webparts to show up in different areas

This is what I am doing. I add a web part via the interface: edit page> modify shared page> add web part> browse I am in a subarea called engineering lets say. I add a document library using this technique. I then edit the settings of this document library and choose select a portal area. The...

Getting webparts to show up in different areas

I have a document library under Home and want it to also show up in another area. I change the settings>location to include not only home but the other area, click ok, and it stays only available in home. Same for a message board, will not show up in another area. After I save these changes, it...
