Did I mention that I run all the spyware removal programs listed here (they did not work) before using ProcessExploror (thanks rjrlist and sysinternals.com) to locate the problem dll? Then I killed explorer.exe and deleted that dll - problem solved.
Yes, rjrlist's post helped me find the dll causing the problem. In case this can help someone in the future, the dll was named reglogs.dll.
