As it turns out, I reversed two steps in the initial boot procedure document and got the default password to take. So now I can login. Now all I have to do is build the rest of it. Of course, a live system wouldn't have this flexibility. Luck does help.
Since this is a non-working system, I used the procedure to initialize the AC complex and changed the UM password. Does this change the system wide password also - I can can't log into the system even after I completed the initialization.
