Thanks for your help - problem now solved.
The problem was indeed a hardware conflict on the board and although I don't understand the cause fully I can work around it.
a) Installed windows 98 - same error
b) made the Colorado IDE0 slave and CD IDE2 Master

I have reinstalled windows - same thing happens

I have installed the HP Colorado backup tape and software on Windows 95. Following the install Windows exits half way through startup with "Windows Protection error - please restart your computer" It will subsequently start in safe mode but i have to uninstall the Colorado to get back...
