Problem solved. I just deleted SQL Sever's registry entry (copying it to a .reg file) and an MSSQL7 folder (which may not have been necessary). Then reinstallation worked smoothly.
The most fundamental issue is that I can't even make a fresh installation of a named instance of SQL Server 2000, because the setup software forces me to either update the current installation, which fails, or cancel.
