Reference is very informative - Only problem is- only goes to Win98 and IE 5.5. I am using Win XP and IE 6.0 and do not seem to have the 'Edit' option in the association.
Sorry I did not mention OS & IE version before.
When downloading a '.Exe' file, I do not get the option screen to 'save' or 'run' so all I get is white screen with placecard upper left.
If I disassociate the .Exe extension with 'Application' - (I use a program called "Freedom of Association" from PC Magazine) - then I will get the...
Have already run Memtest. Also run WDDiag on hard disk.
Safe mode sounded like a good idea except unless the DOS drivers are installed for the CD-Rom drives, they are not recognized in Safe mode. They do not show up under 'My computer' and do nothing when CD is inserted.
Brand new Install of Win98SE on formatted drive. Have already done a reinstall - no change.
Here is an additional quirk- Put the Win98SE disc in drive- starts up fine and brings up menu screen. This is the Autorun part of it. Now, if I click on ANYTHING to continue, like 'Browse" or Video...
AutoInsert is enabled. Audio Cd starts with no problem.
MS Office 2000 and Norton SystemWorks 2002 cds cause system to freeze - only recourse is to reset. Even CTL-ALT-DEL does nothing.
Disabling AutoInsert (or pressing Shift key on cd insertion) allows me to Explore CD and run Setup Program...
Lights indicate error condition. Goes thru start-up and 'Ready' light comes on. If I try self test, goes into error condition.
Replaced toner to eliminate that. Suspected fuser- swapped out with good one. No better.
What else can I check

Win98 starts to normal desktop. Click 'Start' or any icon- computer hangs - mouse still works but no response. May get start menu to come up after 2 minutes or so but cannot go anywhere from there. Eventually, get 'blue screen' System busy... and then "unstable.."
