I figured out what the problem was, i hadn't put the WINS servers in on the win9X/NT/2000 machines. Seems i overlooked such a simple solution

I'm a bit reluctant to try that as our router routes packets between the 2 ranges anyway. (also i'm not quite sure how to go about it :) )
