Usually when you set compression ON, BE will try to use hardware compression if available, then will use software compression. Look at the properties of the DLT, you may have to enable compression in the devices section, or via jumpers/DIP switches on the drive.
This is atoughie, but very common. I would:
1. Run cleaning routine a couple times.
2. Try brand-new tape
3. Uninstall/reinstall Backup Exec
4. Change tape drives
5. Look and see if other devices are conflicting, added new software, or if screensaver/background stuff is running.
