If you can logon via a web browser on your LAN then you have to open the appropriate ports in your firewall.
If not, you have a problem with the web deployment setup.

You are asking for trouble if you update fields in the tables directly. It is very easy to create a corrupt database. Is this worth what you are trying to do?
You need a databae engine on the server first. Then, create an ODBC connection to the data on the server. Finally configure your data folder parameters to point to the server via UNC.
