BadBigBen -- you were right, the upper and lower filters took a dive. I googled missing drives to get the proper registry key to fix.
I have it up and running again (happy friend, lol).

I think I may just remove the drives from the device manager and see if windows will rediscover them. I did download and reinstall drivers for his ethernet card, since that was also wiped out.
Thank you, I'm not sure... it's just that neither drive (E: and F:) shows up when displaying drives through my computer -- and when you go to hardware, the drives show the yellow circle with black question mark and the phrase about the drive not working correctly comes up... I'm not near it to...
Whoever can give me explicit directions would be greatly appreciated. My friend installed Windows XP SP3 on his system (upgraded Win 2000), and blew away a few of his hw drivers. Both his dvd-rom and CDRW need drivers reinstalled, but he doesn't have disks.
