Thanx for the info. The reson I want root enabled is to demonstrate to the students some of the security risks so they can see what not to do. In a real life situation I would never dream of enabling the root account to ftp. :-)
If these computers do not have "file and print sharing" installed they would not be visible in network neighborhood either. This would allow you to search and have netbeui find the computer name but when you browse the network these computers would not be visible. Its worth a look...
If the "fdisk /mbr" doesnt work, one of my old favorites is to boot with a floppy that has debug on it and run the following commands from the command prompt. This completely wipes the mbr and allows you to start from scratch without the headaches of low levelling the drive.
