That's really weird, I've just tried the links now as well and the image on both is there for a split second then disappears leaving a blank page. Very curious.
The top 2 processes are host for windows processes, then windows desk top manager, then explorer (not IE but presumably to do with the...
Apologies for the delay here but typically, the percentage went down and there was nothing to show you - everything seemed normal after playing up all that time!
Today before opening anything and then just with Task Manager and Word open to paste an image into it was 74% memory use - which I'm...
It is the System Idle using the most CPU, it fluctuates between 85-99% while reading Task Manager for a minute or two. But the most memory being used is usually host process for Windows, Microsoft Search Indexer, Windows Explorer (presume this is the desktop) Desktop Manager, more host processes...
Hi all,
Thanks again for all the suggestions/help. I ran the memory test as per Linney's post and it showed up 'no errors' - which is at least good.
I can only think that it probably means I probably should just increase the amount of memory and that I've been running with a minimum.
Like I...
Great - just had one of those 'aha' moments. So that's what it's for! It has rated 2.6 which is obviously low but that was on the graphics and gaming which I don't need anyway. The memory and processor were 3.9 and 4.6 which I presume isn't bad?
yeah I am beginning to wonder if I don't just need more RAM. Still doesn't explain the sudden change though.
The WEI says 3.1 is the version then it says "unrated" - what does that mean?
Thanks dilettante for the suggestion. I have checked those processes actually and they all seem to be innocent - all Microsoft or AVG antivirus. I have turned off the programs that were scouting for updates because you're right, they seem to fill up the CPU.
linney - I'm going to try that RAM...
Thanks Linney,
The link to instructions for the in-place upgrade of Windows is for XP - is there one for Vista which is the OS I have or will it work the same way?
I was wondering also if it could be to do with SP1 as I've heard some people have had problems with that but I suppose if so, it...
I've downloaded and run Process Explorer, great program if only I understood what it's telling me! :-) From what I could see, apart from the antivirus, everything running was Windows files. Also, I did already try disconnecting from the network, closing the antivirus software, I also ran...
Hi guys,
Thanks for taking the time to look.
Linney - I did try a clean boot before (should have said that) and it didn't make any difference. I've also disconnected it from the network, disabled all the hardware and restarted individually, none of it made a difference.
BigBadBen - I ran the...
Hi Jason,
I've sorted the top processes as you suggested and they are as follows:
Windows host processes x 4 (there are about 11 in all but these are at the top), desktop manager, windows sidebar, windows search indexer, Outlook, Audio Device Graph Isolation (?), AVG scanning core module...
Hi everyone,
I wonder if anyone can suggest a solution for me here. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on a laptop with 1GB RAM. Everything has been fine for about a year but suddenly and for no obvious reason the memory usage has shot up. It starts at about 85-89% when it boots up and...
Thanks and you are both right. Actually I have always done that - usually I put what I've backed up(using a stick or DVD) onto another pc to check everything has worked ok and check the pst files by importing them onto that machine and then re-exporting when I'm ready. Of course this time I...
I had a feeling this was likely to be the case. I tried iRecovery and was able to see empty folders of old documents before the formatting which got my hopes up but any pst files I found were the current post formatting. I have looked at some ontrack data recovery stuff and it is extremely...
Hi,
I had to format my pc due to loads of problems. I obviously forgot to click "include subfolders" when exporting my pst files because after reloading everything and trying to import back into Outlook it seems I have an empty Personal File Folder. Is there any way or any software available...
Hi Cheech,
Many thanks for this suggestion - I feel stupid because you are probably bang on the problem and it had never occurred to me. Haven't had chance to check that out yet but will let you know tomorrow. Thanks so much for your help.
Best

Hi Merry,
Thanks for the suggestion. It is currently set at 4.0 and later but as my browser is 6.0 I am not sure whether that would be it but I will give it a go.
Thanks
Abrilet
