Addendum:
I've recently learned that IGMP hosts will not send a Join message in response to a query if the host sees another Join for the same multicast group. This seems to follow the IGMP traffic I've been observing, and also looks like the reason random hosts (it's not just limited to one)...
'Crawling' the network could be done with a utility called Net Scan Tools, or anything that can ping a range of addresses, but this is only useful for learning the addressing layout and how many active hosts there might be.
you cannot easily determine your physical layout with software...
