    I worked it out... you need to click on the object box in the transparency window! Thanks for looking B

    When I put the 2 components in the transparency window - the object I wish to fade with the gradient, and the gradient - a new layer pallet appears (opacity layer...??), and all my other layers disappear. Goodness knows where they went to! So I had to cancel the operation to get me layers...
