    Thanks for your help, I think I have resolve it to be a bad drive. When a disc is inserted it doesn't even start to spin. Thanks

    The OS is Win XP - Home. The drive is on it's own IDE channel as master. The message has gone away, the OS recognizes the drive, but will not read. It says the CD is not formated or is in a format unreadable by windows. Thanks for your help.
