Krosus,
I've only got two speakers, and am not set up to use the 5.1 system. So I shouldn't switch to that, right?

All,
Thanks for the solution offerings. This gives me encouragement to stop trying everything logical I can think of and to just go buy a soundcard if I want to fix this thing outright. I was beginning to suspect this might solve the problem anyway, and recent posts confirm my suspicions...
Thanks for the feedback.
I can play saved music and video from my hard drive with no problems (AVI, Quicktime, etc). The speakers work great (Labtec) with everything I've previously used as well.
I've got Nero's DVD player set to using two speakers, but I noticed a setting called SPDIF, which...
BadBigBen,
Where would I find the setting for the DVD to digital? In the properties for the drive I found something to the effect of "enable digital audio playback", and I have that option selected.
My speakers in SoundMAX are configured for the two stereo speakers on my desktop--but I'll try...
I'm using Nero ShowTime for playing the movies (or Windows MediaPlayer or whatever). In those applications, the volume slider is all the way up.
Then, I use something called Global Audio Control, which allows control over specific things and gives me quick keyboard short-cuts for volume...
I added a USB 2.0 card and mounted the interface inside a floppy port inside my old Win2000 workstation. It works great. The bezel panel that came with the kit was able to accommodate a CD (wide) bay or a floppy bay. I've got four front-accessible USB ports that work well on that system now...
I've got an external DVD burner that seems to play back DVD movies just fine with the exception that I can hardly hear anything from the movie.
My speakers are plenty powerful, but the sound from the movie is super muted in comparison with the rest of the computer sounds.
Does anyone know if...
That's astonishing! I've never heard that this is normal.
Thanks for the replies. Please pitch in if anyone knows of a way of solving this, or if that's just the way it will be.

Yes, the drive is 7,200 RPM and the connection can be either USB 2.0 or Firewire. I get the same results with either.
The strange thing is that it will write much faster than it will read--so the connection and hard drive are ruled out, since they work in writing.
I think there is a limit set...
I've recently purchased a Sony external DVD reader/writer with Nero Suite software.
What seems incomprehensible is that I can burn a full DVD with file checking in about 20 minutes (8x speed), but to recopy the contents back onto my hard drive takes almost 30 minutes. I can't figure out why...
How? What you mentioned is what needs to be done. I would like to know how to make it happen, and the particulars of both what and how in greater detail. If I'm missing steps or if I don't understand something, I won't get it to work properly (which I haven't yet). The Windows wizards seem...
This is probably a basic networking question, but I haven't been able to get this stuff to work yet, so thought I'd better ask.
I have an old Windows 2000 workhorse that will soon be retired to book-keeping, etc. and a new Windows XP Pro system that will replace the workhorse for design. I'm...
