I hope this might help but I was having the same issue with the same Toshiba DVD drive in my Compaq. It played a DVD for a week and then stopped and couldn't recognize it. Compaq DVD-ROM SD-C2402
I have a Compaq Armada e500 with a compaq/toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2402 drive in it. A week ago it was playing DVD's fine. Now I can just hear the drive spinning and nothing happens.
