but what's actually went wrong with the missing logon icons? Was it virus or SP2? A search on the forum suggests that some are having the same problem (thread779-919937 & thread779-915098), but no clear explanation to this. any ideas? what are the altenative work-arounds besides re-format/install?

i've tried with LAN removed and the problem just went off. so it is LAN related issue? perhaps windows explorer trying to access the network drives? i've since removed all the connected network drives, but the problem still there if i'm connected to LAN. is there any way i can check...

Thanks mrfixit. I've tried running some of the spywares that you suggested, and even tried the online trojan and worm scanners. Everything seems normal, except that the problem doesn't go off. what should i do next??
