Doesn't this depend on the tape drive? I seem to recall that DLT's are self-monitoring and will indicate when they need cleaned. It may be worth shutting down ARCserve and running the cleaning tape through the drive a couple of times.
We've migrated a number of NT servers from a variety of different backup solutions (ARCServe, Backup Exec) to a BrightstorEB domain. On some servers which run to two tapes, brighstor will not overwrite the tape in the drive. We're not using media pools, despite ticking use any media in the job...

I use ARCserve 2000 without any additional agents, so far I haven't had any problems successfully restoring mailfiles. I restore them elsewhere, then manually copy them to the notes\data\mail folder.
