Problem solved...something appeared to be wrong with the type of partition...changing this to fat32 with partition table doctor gave me back the correct drive size and ontrack easy recovery let me recover the data to another drive.
I have a 40gb hard disk that had crashed and im not sure what other ppl have done to it allready, but simply if I look in disk managment the partition I want reports the right size (27.39GB) but if I look in windows explorer it only shows up as a 10.1 mb disk and has the system volume...
