NT SP5 Authentication Problems to Linux w/Samba

As a security precaution, I might suggest modifying smb.conf to use encrypted passwords. Its easy to create the smbpasswd file with cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd This does place a bit more of an administrative burden on the admin though..one more file to update, but its...

Samba master browser, can't authenticate user win98 shares

I'm running samba on a redhat 6.2 server. It works fine as far as logon validation and linux shares go. But when I try to use user level access control for the two win98 clients, I run into some strange stuff. The symptoms are these: 1)When creating a share on the windows client, I can't add...

    2 3com 3c509b cards in redhat 6.2 box & can't ping network

PROBLEM SOLVED: The reason the NICs would interfear with each other is because despite different irqs, the ioport was somehow the same, or at least linux thought they were. When I tried to manually configure the ioports the kernel modules wouldn't load. I had to download the newest command...

    2 3com 3c509b cards in redhat 6.2 box & can't ping network

Another interesting thing I noticed: When both cards are in the machine and I manually configure them with ifconfig, when I turn eth1 off, I can ping the network with eth0. But after ten packets or so, five of which (every other one) are reported as dupes, the packets start dissapearing. The...

    2 3com 3c509b cards in redhat 6.2 box & can't ping network

The route table looks good, there's a route for each NIC and the loopback. Other machines on the network can ping each other. Each NIC has its own ip, is loaded, etc. Its a bit complicated after all.

    2 3com 3c509b cards in redhat 6.2 box & can't ping network

I'm trying to install two 3com 3c509b (16 bit ISA) NIC's in a redhat 6.2 server/firewall. I've gotten the kernel to recognize both NICs. It brings both of them up at boot time and they can ping each other and the loop back interface. But I can't ping other machines on the network. would this...

    System requirements for Linux Firewall/gateway

Thanks for the info. Actually, I was thinking that when I get the DSL connection up and running I'd download BeOS, though FreeBSD does have a nicer logo, nice T-shirts too. I'll definately check out coyote linux. Thanks

    System requirements for Linux Firewall/gateway

mapping win98 drive to linux server

I finally got it. it is smbmount, but it's smbmount //computername/sharename /mnt/mountdir as opposed to smbmount '\\computername/sharename' /mnt/mntdir I also tried the IP address before posting the original message...it didn't and still doesn't work (for me). Thanks Techhead for the...

mapping win98 drive to linux server

I have a home network of three computers, a win95 client, a win98se client, and a Redhat 6.1 server. I have samba up and running, with all the shares set up the way I want them. I have a demo version of Arkeia, automated backup software. My problem is that the drive I want to back up the shares...

    Controlling user access to folders

Perhaps I should ask more detailed questions (duh). I would assume I'd have to find the registry key for the username currently logged on. Does anyone know what that key is? I could then use the file and folder objects to set the properties of various files. But when one sets a file to Hidden...

    Controlling user access to folders

My local high school sysadmin has asked me to write a simple security program that restricts a user's access to windows 98 files and folders based on thier logon names. How is this accomplished with VB6?
