Go to the following site and download TCP View it will give you some great information on what ports are open and what they are connected to

In explorer go to tools then folder options
Click on the view tab and select reset all folders
The folders will be reset to the default view for Windows
go to the computer management page and make sure that the server service is running on the server
try connecting to the server using it's ip address from a workstation
If it resolves by ip but not hostname you need to make sure there is no hosts file giving you problems
