    laptop anti-theft

First of all, in my 12 years of experience, I have seen five laptops get stolen. Four of them were taken from the company offices. One was taken from a hotel. So, I stand by my comment that "all laptops have a high probability of being stolen." Norway2, I have certainly heard of the company...

    laptop anti-theft

    1. Your answer is a total non sequitir and has nothing to do with the original question. 2. ALL laptops have a high probability of being stolen. It has nothing to do with how much they travel.

    laptop anti-theft

Does anybody have any experience with any of those laptop anti-theft services? Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on what to avoid? How do these services work?

Careers Advice - Please Read & Change MY Life

JCreamerII--and when exactly did I say that acting is boring? I think Andy needs to step back and look at everything that is out here. I also wonder if this is a good time for him to make a big decision.

Careers Advice - Please Read & Change MY Life

Andy, I am looking over your post again. You had a very traumatic experience. This may not be the time to make any crucial life decision. You should make key decisions when you are strongest, not weakest. It sounds like this shooting is somewhat connected to your job. My first suggestion is a...

How many power outages are acceptable?

Laser printers do use a lot of electricity. But I would never tell anyone to switch out a laser for an inkjet. In fact, if I owned a company, I would bar inkjets from being used anywhere--they are much too expensive.

    Network Admin Certs

All I know is my own experience in the job market. I didn't find them to be helpful. Needless to say, this is not what I wanted to find. I spent a lot of time on those certifications. I certainly could have done something else with my time and wish I would have.

How many power outages are acceptable?

We have several UPS in our server room. A few users have requested them on their workstations and have them. Yesterday, we had one at 4:30. Most people in the office just left for the day. As one of my colleagues pointed out, because most of the people here do billable work (some at well over...

How many power outages are acceptable?

In an average year, how many power outages do you have at your office? It also seems that these are not electric company power outages. In most cases, the power outage is confined to our building. We have a power outage about every two months. I imagine most would consider this unacceptable...

    Network Admin Certs

CompTIA is worthless. Microsoft is worthless. I know this from experience.

    Knuckle cracking..flipflops..etc...

pgmr777-get some therapy. Maybe you should just do some yoga now and then. If you are going to complain about these things, then find your own soundproof workplace. Now that we humans have been removed from the wild, we no longer know how to be quiet. In the wild, making noise increased your...

    Employee arrival and departure

Important data should be on the network, first and foremost. But you never know what users are going to do. I backup data and the user's e-mail as well. Of course, you should make two backups. If illegal activity is involved, then do whatever your lawyer says. It's always nice to give a new...

    Employee arrival and departure

During my career, I have given departing employees this line: "If there is anything on that computer that you don't want anybody to find, get it off now." I think that wiping and re-installing is a very good idea, no matter who it is. Wiping and re-installing gives new users a fresh computer...

I am the alarm company contact

I keep my time in a spreadsheet. Yes, I do take the time back. However, this is still a pain in the ass. I plan my work time. Do you think I would have planned for a call during Game 7 of the NBA finals? There is a big difference between planning to go into the office on a weekend and being...

I am the alarm company contact

Keep in mind that I am already on-call because I am the only IT person in the company. I tried to take a three-day trip to Las Vegas and got probably four or five calls during that time. Our HR/building person is the person who should be dealing with it. Unfortunately, I know from experience...

I am the alarm company contact

When I took this job, it was a very open place. We didn't have an alarm system. Well, the inevitable happened--a break-in. Then we got an alarm system. It was put in around January or February. A couple weeks later, I got my first call on a Sunday afternoon. I live only about ten minutes away...

Looking to change IT roles (what would you train yourself in)?

You might be able to change roles within your current company. The most important factor is whether or not the people in that particular department like you. Outside of that, I don't see much hope in changing roles. It sounds like you are over 40. And your past experience is going to mean...

Do you friend your co-workers on Facebook?

I'll give you an example of stuff I say on Facebook that I would not say in the workplace. I actually celebrated when Ted Kennedy died. There is no reason whatsoever to talk about something like that in the workplace. On Facebook, I talk about that stuff all the time. I am a Laker fan. If my...

Do you friend your co-workers on Facebook?

I haven't posted anything about my job or company on Facebook. That doesn't mean that there won't be other things. I'm a Laker fan, for example. If my CEO is a Celtic fan, would I want him to know that? I will talk about the Lakers at the office with some people, but only a select few...
