I suggest that you check your spanning-tree configuration (should be active on MLT but not on ports ; in normal learning mode), as well as your interfaces configuration (speed / duplex - should be the same on all interfaces within the MLT, on both sides).

Yes you can add your switches without causing an outage.
Just ensure before that :
- the new devices run the same diag+firmware version as the stack,
- the new devices aren't setup to become base units (check the switch on the back panel).
