Can't tell you how it fixed the problem, but a reboot of the Site Server allowed the status messages to be retrieved from the Site Database.

I changed the properties of the Status Filter Rule: Write audit messages to the site database and keep them for 180 days and changed it to 90 days. I'm thinking that the audit messages are reducing the size of my site database. We'll see...
