Which Panasonic are you looking at? In theory you could link the trunks to analogue extensions ports on a Panasonic but far from a good idea.
The usual way would be IP based which would need the correct hardware and licences at each end.

What's the existing cable and how many phones? Cable could be cheap compared to the other options but there is of course the work installing which really depends on your set up.
I've set mine up in parallel to existing deskphones so on the user I have just enabled power user and mobile VOIP client. Login details are the same as the phone. You probably remote worker for your setup.
I am sure someone else can explain how to set up as a standalone client.
