It's a bit of a long way round and I'm not sure if it's particularly correct for your requirements but a simple fix would be to produce a form that pops up instead if you remove all the toolbars etc. it is much more easy to change is appearence.

Have you tried settign an event 'onlostfocus' so that the visibility of the box is hidden once it is entered. For the onlostfocus event procedure try- Forms![Form Name].[Text box name].Visible = False I'm sure it's just one way to skin the proverbial cat, but hope it helps!

I had a similar problem. An alternative you could try using would be - Group by month(funding_date) Since its solved its probably not important though.
