Introduction

This document is designed to give a step-by-step guide to installing and configuring a Web Farm server. Several sections of the document can be removed and used as a check sheet during the installation process.

This procedure assumes that the person performing the installation has some knowledge of Compaq Smartstart and Microsoft Window NT Server Enterprise edition.

Also included in this documentation is some background material on NetBOS administration.

Hardware
Server
Build the Compaq Proliant servers (Standard Butterworths Tolley server kit) according to specification and rack into suitable position.

Remote Insight Board Lights Out Edition (RIB)
The Compaq Remote Insight û Lights Out Edition is a hardware board that allows the remote management of the server. The pack comes with all the necessary hardware and software.

Before beginning installation, consult the documentation that came with the RIB. This has information outlining which servers support the RIB, and which slot should be used for the card.

RAID Card
Install the RAID card into the server. Do not use the first slot, as this is required for the RIB board. Ensure that the internal SCSI controller is disabled. Consult the server and RAID card documentation on how to do this.

Installation and Configuration

Place the Smart Start and Support Software CD in the CD-ROM drive and power on the server.

If the systems utilities screen appears then the system may have already been configured or part configured. If you are sure that you wish to build the server then run the system erase utility. This will erase any data on the attached disks and arrays. The server will need to be restarted after erasing the data.

The following is the installation procedure for Compaq Smartstart and Windows NT4 Server û Enterprise edition.

The syntax used is:

- Normal text - instruction as seen on the screen
- Italicized bold text indicates a key press or a mouse action

The configuration sheets must be signed and then stored in the correct folder.

Installing Lights Out Board
There are two ways to configure the RIB Card. The first is at boot up time, when the F8 prompt appears on the screen. The second is from the Control Panel, RIB configuration.

1. When installed you will have to configure the card, to do this press F8 when you are prompted at boot time to go into the RIB management screen.
2. Select the network drop down list. Ensure that DHCP / DNS settings are disabled.
3. Manually type in an IP address, at the time of writing the IP addresses start at 172.26.9.X, default gateway is 172.26.5.3 and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0
4. Save these changes and exit the setup
5. Wait until the operation system has booted and then place the Compaq SmartStart disk in the cdrom drive (This comes with the board) and when the diskette builder starts close it.
6. Browse to the location of the SSD and run the setup (This program will allow you to update patches and drivers to the current version) and select the express button on the left hand navigation bar.
7. When selected the program will display a list of things that it is going to update. Make sure the RIB board is included but NOT the Wan driver for the RIB board. Click OK
8. After the update has occurred the system will need to be re-started.

The software (SP13099) required to configure the RIB from the Control Panel can be found on the Compaq web site.

Site Server Installation and Configuration

Below are the recommended Microsoft instructions on how to install site server with all the current service packs. It has been modified to reflect the requirements of the Butterworths Tolley Web Farm. A full transcript of the document can be found in the appendix.

The full text of the Microsoft ôQö articles can be found in appendix 4.

Pre-Installation
ò Do not install Site Server 3.0 on a computer functioning as a Backup Domain Controller (BDC). Q184760.
ò Do not install Microsoft Exchange Server on a computer with Site Server installed. Because both server products are resource intensive, performance decreases greatly when these products are installed on the same computer. In addition, Site Server 3.0 and Exchange Server compete for the same TCP ports (389 and 25). Note that this does not apply to a BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5 installation of these products. Q230735, Q229758.
ò Do not install Site Server 3.0 on a computer running Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS). You can, however, install Site Server onto Windows NT Load Balancing Service (WLBS). Q228999.
ò Do not install SQL Server onto WLBS. You can, however, install SQL Server on a computer running Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS).
ò Do not install Site Server 3.0 on a computer running Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server.
ò Do not change any default settings in Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) before you install Site Server (on a new installation). In particular, do not disable NTLM support, change IP binding from "all unassigned," or change port "80" on the Default Web Site. Q234519.
ò Ensure that the root of the installation drive for Site Server 3.0 has NTFS permissions of at least Everyone - Read. If you need to change this setting for security purposes, you can change it when Site Server 3.0 is successfully installed, but do not replace permissions on subdirectories.
ò When you install Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, some ISAPI filters are installed and the Default Web Site is modified. For this reason, Microsoft recommends that you do not install Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 on a computer with Site Server 3.0. Q216991.
ò Microsoft recommends that you do not install Commerce Server on a computer with Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) that requires Internet Explorer 5.0.
ò Do not use computer-cloning software to create a Site Server 3.0 computer. Some of the Site Server 3.0 components install computer-specific information that cannot be cloned.
ò Do not install Site Server onto Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server. For more information, see Q190157.
ò If you determine that you need to run the Mcis2upd.sql script, then use the Mcis2upd.sql script located in the <Site Server Install Dir>\SP3\Scripts directory. Do not download and run Mcis2upd.sql from the Microsoft FTP site.

Site Server 3.0 Installation Steps
ò Microsoft recommends that you install Windows NT Server 4.0 as a stand-alone or member server, rather than as a domain controller. For more information, see the Site Server 3.0 Getting Started booklet.
ò Do not use a computer name that is more than 12 characters long.
ò Install Windows NT onto an NTFS partition.
ò By default, the Windows NT Setup program is configured to install IIS 2.0. You do not need to install IIS 2.0, but it does not cause any harm if you do install IIS 2.0.

ò Install Microsoft Service Pack 3. This is normally done during the installation of Microsoft Windows NT4 Server Enterprise edition as detailed above.

ò Do not substitute Windows NT4 Service Pack 4 or later at this stage

ò Install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 from the NT4 Option Pack CD. This will install the Active Desktop components, which the service pack 2 does not. Do not substitute Windows Internet Explorer 5.0.

ò Note. Install all software to the D: drive.

ò Install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack2 using the standard installation.

ò Install the Microsoft Windows NT4 Option Pack. If prompted, perform an "Upgrade Plus" installation.

ò Install Index Server, Windows Scripting Host, and under the IIS options, install the SMTP server. These options are not installed by default. You must perform a custom installation to enable these options.
ò Do not install the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions. The FrontPage Server Extensions are installed later in the process.
Configure MTS for local (not remote) administration

ò Install the updated Front page 98 Server Extensions version 3.0.2.1706.

ò Change the SQL Server client default Network Library to TCP/IP.

To configure the SQL Server client, run the SQL Server Client Network Utility WINDBVER. On the General tab, select "TCP/IP Sockets" as the Default Network, click Apply, and then click OK. IIS should now use TCP/IP sockets when it connects to the SQL Server computer. Do not perform this step if SQL Server (6.5 or 7.0) is installed on the same computer.

ò Verify that the MSDTC service is started on both the Site Server computer and the SQL Server computer, and that MSDTC is configured to start automatically

ò Install Site Server 3.0.

Do not create new membership instances prior to installing Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition, because the Trey Research Web site will not install or configure correctly.

Configure Site Server 3 to use SQL as the database and not Access

ò Install Microsoft Windows NT4 Service Pack 4.

Do not substitute Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later at this point. When Windows NT 4.0 SP4 is installed, you will be required to restart the computer. After you restart the computer, you will be prompted to install the Y2K updates. Do not install the Y2K updates at this time. The Y2K updates are installed by Internet Explorer 4.0 SP2 and MDAC 2.1 SP2.

o Copy files to a backup directory

o Rename the backup directory.

ò Install Microsoft Data Access Control

This is also known as MDAC 2.1 Service Pack 2

ò Install Active Directory Services Interchange (ASDI) 2.5

ò Install Site Server Service Pack 3
Configure the Personalization and Membership database on the SQL Server computer for single-user mode.
Run the Mcis2upd.sql script against all pre-existing SQL Server databases that support LDAP. You do not need to run this script against SQL Server databases created after Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 2 is applied.
Reconfigure the Personalization and Membership database on the SQL Server computer for multi-user mode.
ò Install Windows NT4 Service Pack 5. Use NT SP6A for all new
Installations of Site Server

ò Team the network card using the Compaq Network Utilities. Use adaptive load balancing, not failover.
