Moving to Trusted Systems and the root password

by  jollyroger  Posted    (Edited  )
Hello there

As more and more SA move to a trusted system on HP-UX, the potential for root passwords to be forgotten or lost becomes increased and it becomes more and more difficult for you to find out the lost password with different encryption routines on the password, if you can even find or gain access to the password in the /tcb directory.

There is a solution to this, and it means the restoration of the password if necessary by re-booting the machine with out having to switch it off!! Thus crashing disks and any other applications you have running.

This is to switch a users ability to "Boot into Single User Mode" on. Generally most SA's have a user which acts as either their login or as an admin login to gather information about the machine etc. This is the user who should have the ability to "boot the machine into single user mode", and from here you can reset the root password.

Best of luck now
