Getting the Network Wizard to Run to Completion

by  bcastner  Posted    (Edited  )
The Network Wizard is an often maligned aspect of XP. While you can do manually everything the Wizard accomplishes, it does do a competent job of setting up a new network connection.

Unfortunately, it is cranky at times. The following are workarounds developed by myself and others (notably Ken Wickes) for common problems with the Wizard running to completion:

. Call the Wizard directly:
Start,Run, rundll32 hnetwiz.dll HomeNetWizardRunDll

. Try re-registering some key .DLLs:
Start, Run, cmd

(type these entries one at a time)

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netman.dll

And then reboot. Test.

. The Spooler service can sometimes interfere with the Wizard.
Start, Run, net stop spooler

Now try the Wizard.

At the end, restart the Spooler Service:
Start, Run, net start spooler

. Missing files

It does happen.

Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

Have your XP CD handy.

Best,
