Windows Explorer Left Panel "Greyed Out"

by  Coffier  Posted    (Edited  )
To reenable the left panel so that the toolbar buttons (such as Search, History, etc.) work again:

1) Go to a DOS prompt
2) Type:

rundll32 \WINNT\System32\shell32.dll DllInstall

This will repair the Explorer shell entries in the registry, and correct the problem. The same version of IE is kept, and no service packs are lost.
