All recent Microsoft operating systems have peer to peer file and printer sharing facilities built in. On every version of Windows except NT 4 it is possible to easily disable this. With NT 4, it is not possible to shut down or disable file and printer sharing by uninstalling it as with other operating systems, but a little workaround will have the same effect.
Note that this should not be done on any machine participating in an NT domain, as it closes down all the
Microsoft networking facilities, but will not affect those in a Novell network environment or standalone machines. It has not been tested in other environments.
Instructions: 1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Services. 2. Scroll down the list to find Computer Browser. Highlight it and click Stop.
[/i]This will stop the computer browser service, that is used to locate other machines on the network.[/i] 3. Click the Startup button and set Startup Type to disabled to stop it running the next time the computer is rebooted. Click OK to close the screen. 4. Scroll down to the Server service. Click Stop to stop this service. This is the actual file and printer sharing service. 5. Click Startup and set the Startup type to disabled.
As a bonus, this will close TCP/IP port 135.
This process can be done on any NT 4 server as well, and is probably a good idea on servers that aren't used as domain controllers or for file and print sharing.
