Restoring XP registry in half the time

by  BuckeyeComputers  Posted    (Edited  )
Every one has seen it probally at one time or another:
C:\windows\system32\config\system corrupted or missing

As we all know by now this is just a registry error that prevents your system from starting and the fix is a far cry from the 98 version of scanreg /restore.

After having to go thru the steps according to M$:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545

I realized that i could save myself alot of time by doing the last step first as a precaution..By creating the TMP Folder (so it is accesible from recovery console) and copying my last good restore point registry files as:
system.new
default.new
sam.new
software.new
security.new
And placing these in this tmp folder.
Now if i ever need to run recovery console because of a corrupted registry I can just delete the files from c:\windows\system32\config
and replace them with my files which also in turn allows me access to my normal system restore points. I keep these updated about once a month which gives me a decently updated registry if i ever need it.

Hope this little faq is helpful and usefull to all my friends out here..Please rate it as to what you think.
