Windows 98 will not shutdown
Windows 98 - Shutting Down.
It is well know that Win98se will not shut down in many cases specially when using mapped network drives, one of the main causes of this is all to do with rundll.exe keeping resources open.
So to fix this you need to create a desktop shortcut to
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE
With the command line in the icon properties off
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE USER.EXE,EXITWINDOWS
or
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1
(Cant take the praise for this one, its from the helpful, chaps
at MS..)
and start in should be
C:\WINDOWS.
Doubleclick on the icon you created. This will close all programs and cleanly shutdown Win 98...!!
or if you want to restart create the icon same as above but with the switch below
rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec
Or if you want to check out the MS technote below

Lastly it is also a good idea to go to the system config utility, and in the startup section, untick both "load power profiles". Windows tries to load these twice and this causes problems.
If it is still failing to shut down, you may want to look in the BIOS settings, and check what power saving functions are enabled.. However if you do not know what the BIOS is or are not sure what a change will affect, I suggest that you leave it well alone, as I would hate to think you messed up your system after reading this..
